A 3D game you play in the browser: spend one day as an engineer in a chip fab, from a phone call in the middle of the night all the way to clocking out. You don't need to know anything about chips: tap any jargon for a plain explanation.
Your room is pitch dark and your phone is buzzing somewhere by the bed. Find it and pick up: the night shift says the etch tool ETCH-03 is down with an urgent batch of wafers stuck inside, and the whole line is waiting for you to give them a time.
02Before the fab
Suit up
Before you go into the cleanroom, you cover up from head to toe: hood, face mask, coverall, boot covers, gloves. You even get to pick the color: Standard White, Visitor Blue, Rookie Yellow, Equipment Purple or Night-Shift Gray.
03Morning · 09:00
A red light. What do you do?
The wet clean tool next to you, WET-02, jumps from green to red and the alarm keeps going. Press reset and let it finish, or stop and leave the wafers where they are until someone takes a look? Two buttons, same size, no right answer. Your choice costs time and ends up on your clock-out card.
04Morning · 11:21
One slip, and the wafer shatters
You are carrying test wafers to the tool, you trip, and down you go. The pieces scatter across the floor and stay there. Wafers are thin and expensive: once one breaks, it stays broken.
05Afternoon · 13:40
Earthquakes, outages: every shift has surprises
An earthquake alert pops up on your phone. Three seconds later, the floor starts to shake. Any shift can throw something at you: an earthquake, a voltage dip, the dispatch system going offline, the overhead transport getting stuck, a torn glove. It is different every time.
06Evening · clocking out
The clock-out card (overtime and titles)
Your official clock-out time is 17:30. When do you actually make it out the door? Every shift ends with a recap card: this shift's overtime, your running total and the titles you earned. Save it as an image and share it.
Switch roles
Three roles, four shifts each
Same fab, same day, someone else's shoes. The day has four shifts — late night, morning, afternoon and evening — and the one you get follows the time you open the site.
PEProcess engineer
Looks after one etch tool, ETCH-03, and gets the first call when it breaks.
